UTM’s Chidanti Malunga to face competition for Chief Executive Officer Contract Renewal

Chidanti Malunga

Joseph Chidanti Malunga, associated with UTM, faces potential competition if he aims to retain his position as the Chief Executive Officer of the Tobacco Commission (TC). During the inaugural board meeting on Friday, the newly constituted TC board decided to reopen the application process for the CEO role, currently held by Dr. Joseph Chidanti Malunga.

Dr. Godfrey Chapola, chairperson of the TC board, disclosed that the meeting in Lilongwe also included deliberations on Dr. Chidanti Malunga’s contract, which expired on February 1, 2024.

Dr. Chidanti Malunga has the option to re-apply for the position and compete with other candidates. Dr. Chapola explained that in light of the absence of a board at TC upon the expiration of his contract, Dr. Chidanti Malunga has been placed on leave with full pay and benefits until the end of the government’s extension period.

Additionally, the board has relieved TC’s Director of Finance, Andrew Mfune, of his duties following an audit query uncovering irregularities at the Commission. Mfune has been granted leave to address these issues at a later date.
