Coach Mabedi Supports Mhango Amid Backlash: ‘Unprofessional Conduct’ Explained

Social media erupted in criticism during the Malawi vs. Zambia game as Gabadinho Mhango, who had been substituted by Coach Patrick Mabedi due to his current lack of form, immediately headed to the dressing room instead of remaining on the bench. Many frustrated Flames fans deemed Mhango’s behavior temperamental and unprofessional, suggesting that he should consider quitting the national team saying his services appear no longer needed.

In response, Coach Mabedi clarified that Mhango’s actions were not inappropriate, explaining that players are given the freedom to go to the dressing room after being substituted due to the lack of changing kits available to the team.  Mabedi noted that Mhango did come to the bench and exchanged pleasantries with him before leaving, indicating no cause for concern.

Mhango, who plays in South Africa, had a disappointing performance during the match against Kenya, where the team struggled in the first half and ultimately lost 1-2.
