Hurricane Nankhumwa sweeps off Mulanje Central as people defect from DPP

Kondwani Nankhumwa

Yesterday was a continuation of a show of force as constituency governor in Kondwani Nakhumwa’s Mulanje Central Constituency gathered hundreds of people who denounced that they are no longer Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) following the firing of Nankhumwa from the party.

“When they fired Nankhumwa, it meant that they also fired us and we will follow Nankhumwa wherever he will go,” said the governor to much applause from the candidates.

Political analyst say the firing of Nankhumwa will boomerang on Peter Mutharika and his DPP as in 2025, Nankhumwa will eat into areas which were predominantly DPP.

“With 50% plus one, it will be an up-hill task for the DPP to climb given what is going on,” said Shire Time’s senior political analyst Joseph Masina.

Nankhumwa was fired from DPP alongside other senior party politicians Grizelda Jeffrey, Mark Botoman and Cecilia Chazama. It is being rumoured that they will form their own political party.
