Health worker arrested over drug theft

Two Malawians Behind Bars for Kidnapping 14-year-old Indian Boy

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 26-year-old medical personnel identified as Lusayo Kaliza, on suspicion that she stole drugs and other medical equipment at Bwaila District Hospital.

Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said Kaliza, who works as an Under 5 Clinic Assistant Pharmacist at the said hospital, was apprehended by security guards manning the hospital.

Chigalu said she was stopped for checking at the hospital exit gate while driving a vehicle, Daihatsu Mira, registration number BW 7491.

He said upon thorough searching, the security guards found the following medical equipments;

30 doses of LA, 50 Vials of X-Pen, 10 litres of RIL, 11 boxes of gloves, 11 giving sets, 3 bottles of Amoxicilin Suspension, 2 bottles of Myconova Suspension, 2 bottles of Paracetamol sachets, 2 bottles of Paracetamol Syrup and 1 packet of face masks.

She was then surrendered to Lilongwe Police on Wednesday evening.

He added that upon interrogation by police, the suspect admitted to have taken the items from Bwaila Under 5 Pharmacy Clinic where she works.

Investigations on the matter are ongoing.

Kaliza, who hails from Mchochoma Village, Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza in Dedza, will appear in court soon to answer a case of theft by public servant which contravenes section 283 as read with section 278 of the Penal Code.

This development comes barely two weeks after police in the district arrested four Kamuzu Central Hospital workers over theft of 40 packets of gloves.
