Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has called on the police to with speed investigate the alleged abduction of Human Rights Activist Sylvester Namiwawa of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) on Wednesday 27th July 2022 by unknown people.
“The alleged abduction is against one of President Chakwera’s leadership principles under the SUPER Hi5, which is the rule of law. The President remains resolute in his commitment to fight any forces challenging Government efforts to keep Malawi a free society in which every citizen enjoys their rights as enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Malawi,” in part reads the statement issued by Anthony Kasunda, the Presidential Press Secretary.
The statement added: “The President, therefore, condemns this lawless act and calls upon the Malawi Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to speed up investigation into the matter until Mr. Namiwa’s safety is restored, his captors are brought to justice and Malawians are informed of the truth regarding his alleged abduction.”
Word on the street are to the effect that Namiwa has staged the abduction in the same manner veteran Politician Kamlepo Kalua and one Moses Kumkuyu did to gain public sympathy. Namiwa was ordered by the courts not to organise demonstrations as one of his bail conditions and fearing revocation of the said bail, they say he managed to self-abduct.
