The Ministry of Education has reiterated that schools will re-open on 3rd January 2023 despite the scourge of cholera which has so far killed close to the 500 Malawians across the country.
The rate at which Cholera is spreading caused jittery and worries among Malawians who thought perhaps the government would announce new school dates but Secretary for Education Chikondi Mussa said schools will re-open on 3rd January as earlier planned.
Mussa urged all schools to follow the standard operation procedures and practice hygiene measures in order to contain the surging cholera cases in the country. She emphasized that the Ministry will closely monitor the situation in conjunction with the Ministry of Health.
Cholera is a bacterial disease usually spread through contaminated water. Cholera causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. Left untreated, cholera can be fatal within hours, even in previously healthy people.
