Restore Passports Issuance System or Face the Axe,” Warns Malawi’s President Chakwera

Pres. Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera sternly directed the leadership of the Immigration Department to expedite the restoration of the passport issuance system within a three-week time-frame or face potential replacement by individuals better equipped to serve the nation. This ultimatum was delivered during an address at the Bingu International Convention Centre, where he also inaugurated the Malawi Business Registration System and Land Management System, emphasizing the imperative of safeguarding the nation’s technological infrastructure.

Chakwera previously addressed Parliament, revealing that the passport issuance system had fallen victim to cyber intrusion by what he termed “digital mercenaries” demanding ransom for its restoration. Despite this setback, he asserted that his administration would not yield to the demands of criminal elements.
