Malawi Pres. Chakwera spices up Mangochi diocese golden jubilee celebrations

Pres. Lazarus Chakwera

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is currently participating in the celebration of the golden jubilee, priestly silver jubilee anniversary, and ordination of deacons into priests for the Mangochi Diocese.

This historic event has gained momentum at Mangochi Stadium, drawing a massive crowd eager to witness the ceremony with the Malawi leader as the main guest. President Chakwera, accompanied by the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, arrived at the venue earlier.

According to information from the diocese, the Fort Johnston Apostolic Prefecture, which later became the modern-day Mangochi Diocese, was established on May 29, 1969. Initially, it encompassed Fort Johnston and a significant part of Kasupe (Machinga) District, north of the Shire River. The Apostolic Prefecture was later elevated to the status of a diocese on September 17, 1973. The diocese now covers the geographical areas of Mangochi, Balaka, and a portion of Machinga Districts. Currently, the diocese is home to over 20 priests.
