Speaking during a silver jubilee of Mzuzu University on Wednesday, Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera pledge that his government will provide all the necessary support to the University to become world class.

“It was 25 years ago that the extraordinary journey of Mzuzu University began. That is a quarter of a century since this institution took its rightful place in the story of our nation’s development. I find it remarkable that what started as a Teachers Training College with an enrolment capacity of 500 students is now the academic giant we are celebrating today,” said Chakwera in his address.

He added:

“And the journey of Mzuzu University’s transformation is far from over. As Government, we want to see this institution reach milestones that are even higher and greater. That is why I am committed to providing this University with the necessary financial, technical and moral support to operate, and also why I am determined to see this University propelled into its destiny of becoming a world class centre of academic excellence. So on this historic day, I want to invite all of you to think of the past 25 years as a small beginning, for we must dream in such a way as to ensure that Mzuzu University becomes an institution of world acclaim in the next 25, or 50, or 100 years.”

Chakwera stated that it was because of the dream of progress towards a better future that his Administration is funding the construction of the new library and auditorium at the University.

He added:

“It is because of this dream that my Administration allocated close to half a billion in the current financial year’s budget for the assessment and design activities that must be done in readiness for the construction of additional accommodation for students here,” he said.
