Pres. Chakwera administration distributing Maize to dry spell-affected households in Karonga

Situation in Karonga

Contrasting situations. In the Southern region of Malawi, cyclone Freddy wiped out houses and property including embellishments. In the Northern District of Karonga, embellishments went dry due to drought, and people there as well have no food.

In response, President Lazarus Chakwera’s government has embarked on distributing free maize to all affected households in Karonga.

The distribution exercise will commence in Karonga South Constituency before extending to other constituencies where 12, 500 households in Karonga South constituency are expected to benefit from the program.

“The distribution will be in each and every constituency. The number of beneficiaries from all constituencies has already been filed,” reads the report.

Speaking in a Telephone interview, Member of Parliament (MP) for Karonga South constituency, Uchizi Mkandawire said trucks of maize have already been ferried to his area.

Mkandawire who is also Minister of Youths and Sports thanked the government for a quick response.

“I think now the doubting Thomases can see for themselves that Chakwera administration is a caring government. Chakwera is not sleeping but making sure that cyclone Freddy and the dry spell victims are safe. As an MP for Karonga South, I am very happy,” he said.

Senior Chief Wasambo who is from the area was excited about the development saying “this is a big relief to us. My subjects and I had no hope.”
