Minister of Local Government, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has disclosed that the anticipated cost of this year’s Independence Celebrations, set to take place on July 6, 2023, amounts to 320 million Kwacha. As the head of the ministerial committee overseeing the event, Banda confirmed that the necessary funds were already allocated in the national budget. The festivities will encompass national prayers, music concerts, and a football match between Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets and Tanzania’s Yanga FC.
Additionally, Minister Chimwendo shared that the government is in discussions with an undisclosed foreign president to participate in the events, starting from July 5. Malawi celebrates its independence from the United Kingdom on July 6 each year. The country achieved independence in 1964 after being under British colonial rule.
