On Wednesday, ten candidates will compete for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) nomination in the upcoming by-elections for the Dedza Central Constituency. The primary election follows the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Daniel Chiwere.
Notable contenders among these ten candidates are Willard Gwengwe, elder sibling of Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe, and Kenneth Chiwere, brother of the late Daniel Chiwere.
The election will be presided over by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC). Dedza is an MCP stronghold, which explains the multitude of candidates vying for the MCP ticket, as securing the party’s nomination often leads to near-certain victory in the main by-election.
