In a striking display of political strength and popularity, Abida Sidik Mia, the Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) Second Deputy President, has once again solidified her position by going unopposed in the party’s primary elections for Chikwawa Nkombedzi Constituency. Yesterday at Saopa ground in Traditional Authority Ngabu in the Constituency, the seasoned politician cruised through the MCP primary elections in Chikwawa Nkombedzi Constituency without a single challenger stepping forward—a pattern increasingly common among the party’s top brass.

First it was Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda, then MCP Deputy President Catherine Gotani Hara, and now Abida Mia, whose unopposed nominations reveal not only her entrenched influence but also the deep loyalty she commands across party lines. As one insider put it, “These are heavyweights within the MCP — who would dare contest them in a primary? Their real challenge lies ahead in securing their parliamentary seats, though even that seems a near certainty, given their broad appeal beyond just party faithful.”

Abida Mia’s reputation as a tireless and pragmatic leader is well-earned. In Chikwawa Nkombedzi, a constituency that has become a model of development under her stewardship, she has delivered concrete results—modern health clinics, new school blocks, police units, bridges, and vital boreholes dot the landscape, signaling progress and hope. This track record has endeared her not only to the MCP base but also to many who might otherwise oppose her politically.

As the MCP nears the conclusion of its primary elections, the party continues to navigate a highly competitive and dynamic process across the country. While most nominations have proceeded smoothly, the party is committed to resolving any remaining disputes swiftly, ensuring that the strongest candidates represent MCP in the upcoming 16th September 2025 elections.

For Abida Sidik Mia, the path forward appears clear: armed with solid accomplishments, widespread support, and the weight of party leadership, she is poised to continue her transformative work and secure another decisive victory in the general polls.
