MBC political commentators Kasakula & Mvula predicts Nankhumwa effect to benefit MCP in 2025

Kondwani Nankhumwa

Following the firing of Kondwani Nankhumwa from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), political commentators in the country have said that his firing will ultimately benefit President Chakwera of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as he seeks a fresh mandate in 2025.

The political pundits, George Kasakula and Humphrey’s Mvula of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) said that Nankhumwa is a big political player in the Lomwe belt.

“He is a grassroot politician. He connects well with the people and his roots are spread across the country. If he will contest for the Presidency in 2025, he is most likely going to split votes in the southern region, the purported stronghold of the DPP. This in turn will have an effect for the DPP to reach 50% plus one and in the final analysis, MCP will have an advantage to easily reach the 50% plus one minimum threshold for one to be declared a winner,” said Mvula.

On his part, Kasakula said Peter Mutharika and DPP must slow down saying the path they have taken is a path to oblivion.

Recently, the DPP fired senior party officials and also suspended a number of senior officials like Uladi Mussa who has since joined MCP as of yesterday. Joyce Chitsulo of Mwanza West Constituency has also said that she is no longer affiliated to the DPP, a party which has lost direction ahead of 2025 elections.
