ESCOM’s Remarkable Turnaround: Profitable under Chakwera, After Losses in DPP Era

Malawi now has leadership that promotes financial discipline and not perpetrate, aide and abet looting, looting and looting of public coffers synonymous with the disgraced Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Now after years of making losses, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has in the past two years made a profit of K22 Billion and K8 Billion respectively.

This good news was disclosed in Mangochi where Escom celebrated and rewarded four Linesmen who gained recognition for their actions in extinguishing a fire on an electric power line, a video of which had gone viral on social media. According to Escom’s Chief Executive Officer, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, the company anticipates an improvement in electricity services for Malawians now that they are generating profits, marking a significant departure from their history of financial losses.

Kumwenda explained that in the past two financial years, Escom has achieved profits of K8 billion and K22 billion, enabling the corporation to address pending connection projects. He extended an invitation to the general public to join Escom in combating vandalism, a problem that has been incurring significant financial losses for the company.

From 2017 onward, ESCOM has been associated with everything bad in this country.  These negative narratives have ranged from financial losses in 2017 to allegations of organized fraud, misprocurements, corruption, and abuse. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been implicated in various abuses involving Escom.

This explains why Kamkwamba is currently seeking the public’s support for the organization under the leadership of President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera. Chakwera has unequivocally stated his commitment to preventing the misuse of state-owned enterprises.
