As part of his high-priority agenda to foster unity among Malawians, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is spearheading the launch of Umodzi Day at Chilimampunga Ground in Mtandire Township, Lilongwe.

The Ministry of Local Government, Unity, and Culture designates Umodzi Day as an official national celebration, slated for the second week of October each year. Today’s event marks the inaugural launch.

“The core objective of this day is to foster unity in diversity, inspired by our collective will to live in peace and prosperity as Malawians,” said minister responsible, Richard Chimwendo Banda.

The ministry stated that Umodzi Day will serve as a platform for interaction and the celebration of unity among Malawians, acknowledging the country’s rich cultural diversity, various faiths, and political affiliations. This initiative aims to foster peaceful coexistence, a fundamental component in achieving the objectives outlined in Malawi 2063.

President Dr. Chakwera is expected to embark on an almost one-kilometer walk to reach the venue at Chilimampunga Ground. Along the way, he will engage with Malawians and visit pavilions hosted by diverse ethnic groups within Malawi. The event is graced by the presence of members from various political parties, religious, and cultural organizations, and it features musical performances by different cultural groups. Currently, Skeffa Chimoto is entertaining the attendees with his songs.
