Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, is poised to host a gathering with media professionals on Thursday morning at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. This occasion marks part of the annual celebrations for World Press Freedom Day, observed every 3rd of May. President Chakwera has upheld this tradition since assuming office, showing his commitment to press freedom.
During the event, the President will share breakfast with journalists, fostering dialogue and camaraderie. The main celebrations for World Press Freedom Day will take place in Mangochi on Saturday, where exceptional journalists will receive awards.
Golden Matonga, Chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) chapter, acknowledges that Malawi’s press enjoys relative freedom compared to other nations. However, he underscores the importance of further improvements. Matonga highlights the need for increased accessibility of the president for media inquiries and advocates for the repeal of certain anti-media legislations.
