The Malawi government has, today, officially open a mission in Tel Viv, Israel. Malawi’s resolve to open an embassy in Israel was reached in 2021 when the two countries concluded their diplomatic dialogue on the matter, with initial plans for the embassy to be stationed in the controversial city of Jerusalem.
The event took place with at 12:30pm with other dignitaries from other countries domiciled in Israel gracing the occasion.
Former member of parliament for Lilongwe City Centre David Bisnowatty is currently the Charge d’Affaires for this mission.
Three ministers including Foreign Affairs Minister (Nancy Tembo), Minister of Labour (Agnes Nyalonje) and Minister Information and Digitization (Moses Kunkuyu) represented the Malawi Government.
The Minister of Labour formed the delegation for a signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding on the labour export deal between Israel and Malawi in which Malawian youths are trekking to Israel to work in the agriculture sector.
While other Malawian youths have already traveled to Israel since November last year, the labour export deal has, following the signing, transitioned from agent-aided to Government-to-Government deal.
Shire Times senior international relations expert, Ludwig Chalamanda, has suggested that the opening of the embassy in Israel while thousands of Malawians are working there is crucial.
“There was news that the embassy was to be opened around November this year. The fast-tracking of the opening is crucial since thousands of our fellow nationals are already in that country. Those people are bound to encounter scenarios that would require state-level representation to look into their welfare and this development fits into the urgency required of that service”, said Chalamanda.
