Fresh allegations have emerged linking the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to a plot aimed at mobilizing vendors to stage anti-government protests as part of a wider scheme to destabilize the country.
A leaked document allegedly summarizing a DPP meeting held at Area 49 in Lilongwe suggests the party resolved to continue sponsoring protests in major cities, proclaiming a goal “to bring down the government by April 2025”.
The document further claims that the protests are being fueled by the rising cost of living, with vendors being used as a tool to create public discontent.
It is also alleged that the meeting targeted some cabinet ministers for verbal attacks, including Michael Usi, Moses Kunkuyu, Richard Chimwendo Banda and Jessie Kabwila, whom the party accuses of being behind the ruling party’s resilience.
Neither the DPP nor government officials have commented on the allegations. Meanwhile, spontaneous protests have already erupted in areas like Ndirande in Blantyre, where vendors were staged violent demonstrations that have left several businesses looted.
