Chakwera Welcomes New Envoys from Norway and India, Pledges Stronger Bilateral Ties

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera on Friday received Letters of Credence from two newly appointed diplomats, Norway’s Ambassador Anne Sofie Bjelland and India’s High Commissioner Amararam Gujar, in a ceremony held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

High Commissioner Gujar reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s development agenda across several key sectors, including agriculture, food processing, mining, health, and tourism. He stressed the need to strengthen Malawi’s food processing industry to increase export capacity and stimulate economic growth.

“Malawi’s mining potential is vast, and I will encourage more Indian investors to explore opportunities in this sector during my tenure,” Gujar said.

Norwegian Ambassador Bjelland also formally assumed her diplomatic role, reinforcing Norway’s long-standing partnership with Malawi, particularly in areas of governance, development cooperation and education.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Kainga Nangozo highlighted the importance of these bilateral ties, noting that both India and Norway have been consistent partners in supporting Malawi’s development. She cited collaboration in agriculture, mining, education and tourism as examples of enduring cooperation.

Friday’s ceremony marked the latest step in Malawi’s efforts to strengthen international partnerships aimed at driving economic growth and advancing national priorities under President Chakwera’s administration.
