Chakwera proudly unveils a significant billboard in Lilongwe, marking the completion of the Mzimba Street Dual Carriageway in the Capital City. This declaration, in both significance and reality, extends far beyond these interconnected roads, symbolizing the continued delivery of remarkable developments by President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration.
The accomplishments are many and diverse. The construction and renovation of the Lilongwe to Karonga M1 Road, a multi-billion Kwacha investment, are in full swing. New healthcare facilities, such as the K30 billion Phalombe District Hospital, are now fully operational. Several projects are underway to provide clean water, including the Nkhata Bay Town Water Supply System and the Mangochi Potable Water Supply, both commissioned just last month.
With impressive speed, a new phase is commencing: the construction of 10,000 housing units for security officers. The Ministry of Lands has issued an intention to award contracts to 74 firms to construct these houses across the country, with a budget exceeding K200 billion. This initiative is expected to bring the total number of constructed units to nearly 5,000, a significant accomplishment given that the previous government left without completing any.
The intention to award contracts was published in The Nation newspaper, and the Government has secured approval from the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority to proceed with the contracts.
This project benefits officers of the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Prison Service, and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Many of these officers currently live in old, cramped, and dilapidated houses, some dating back to the 1950s.
President Chakwera’s administration is addressing this issue, aiming to provide security officers with the respect and conditions they deserve. Security agencies play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, and their welfare must match the nature of their work.
This housing project also brings additional benefits, including job creation, aligning with President Chakwera’s campaign promise of job opportunities.
Security analyst Sheriff Kaisi praises this project as a significant motivator for security officers, emphasizing that such improvements were long overdue.
Despite the country facing challenges from cyclones, storms, and flash floods in recent years, President Chakwera’s administration continues to demonstrate its resilience and strength through these remarkable developments.
