Malawi Police Pledge to Curb Lilongwe Murder Surge: Seek Public Cooperation

Peter Kalaya

Over the past few weeks, Lilongwe has witnessed a surge in violent incidents, specifically three cases of murder. This pattern follows a distressingly familiar sequence: an individual is reported missing, only to be discovered deceased a few days later, either inside their vehicle or abandoned elsewhere. This unsettling trend has undeniably sown fear among the city’s residents.

The Malawi Police Service (MPS), an entity entrusted by the Constitution with the responsibility of safeguarding homeland security, has emerged from its passive state, offering reassurance to all Malawians. They assert that they are actively pursuing leads and making substantial progress in apprehending the suspects linked to Lilongwe’s two notorious murder cases from the past week, where victims were tragically discovered inside their vehicles.

In a statement signed by Police Service Public Relations Officer, Senior Superintendent Peter Kalaya, MPS is, among others, meeting and interviewing relatives, workmates and friends of the deceased to gather information on the cases.

“The Service thus, calls upon all to cooperate with it by availing themselves when needed and opening up in providing the information sought. In addition, MPS is carrying out targeted intelligence-led operations and has intensified its visibility, both in cities and rural areas, to flush out all criminals. MPS pledges to continue working diligently to keep the country safe and secure for all and calls upon every Malawian to join in the fight against crime by sharing information about criminals in their areas,” in part reds the statement.
