The University of Malawi (Unima) has qualified for the finals of the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. Out of the seven qualified universities from Africa, Unima secured the third position. The preliminary rounds of the competition were conducted virtually from May 20 to May 27, 2023.
Enoch Chilemba, a senior law lecturer at Unima, disclosed that only 24 teams from around the world will proceed to the in-person final rounds scheduled to take place from July 17 to 21, 2023. Teuka Tembo, a final-year law student representing Unima, described the competition as both challenging and exciting. Tembo acknowledged the opportunity to compete against some of the finest law schools globally and to interact with sharp legal minds. Tembo expressed gratitude for the support and mentorship received from brilliant professors and lawyers who prioritize excellence.
Bentry Nyondo, a third-year law student representing Unima, expressed the team’s motivation to compete as title contenders from the beginning. Nyondo emphasized their determination to utilize the feedback received from the preliminary round judges and address any imperfections in their performance to bring the title home.
Among the other African universities in the competition are Moi University and Kabarak University from Kenya, the University of Lagos from Nigeria, the Muslim University of Morogoro from Tanzania, as well as the University of Zimbabwe and Midland University from Zimbabwe. The remaining universities represent regions such as Asia Pacific, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
