Communication and Regulatory Authority Director Generals from Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana are meeting in the Malawi capital Lilongwe where they are discussing plans to establish a network that eliminates roaming costs within the region comprising the three countries. This has been described as a significant step toward enhancing regional integration and facilitating business activities. This initiative is being discussed under the Single Digital Market Technical Meeting whose overall aim is to create a seamless communication experience for individuals and businesses across borders.
According to MACRA Director General Daud Suleman, this initiative will see people traveling in these countries charged the same rates as they would be when making calls within their own country. He says this move will promote affordability and convenience, encourage cross-border communication, and contribute to the growth of regional trade and cooperation.
They have disclosed that this initiative may be launched in August this year. When implemented, this endeavor is expected to have positive impacts on various sectors, including tourism, trade, and business. It will also contribute to strengthening regional ties and fostering closer relationships between the involved countries.
