Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera will tomorrow address the nation, state house press office has announced.
In a statement signed by State House Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda, the President will be addressing the nation at 6 pm local time ‘on a matter of national interest.”
On social media, speculation has heightened that the President will deliver a speech to the nation on his efforts to combat corruption in the country. This follows the President’s order given to the country’s graft busting body, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to conduct investigations and provide him with a report in 21 days detailing the corrupt persons claimed to have corruptly interacted with British citizen businessman of Malawian ancestry Zuneth Sattar.
The National Crimes Agency of the United Kingdom named Vice President Saulos Chilima, Chief of State House Prince Kapondamgaga as among those who are alleged to have dealt corruptly with Sattar.
When the President gave the order to the ACB about three weeks ago, he stated emphatically that he will not shelter anyone who is implicated by the local criminal investigation agency, the ACB, implying that he will adopt his normal executive option of removing all those implicated from positions of power.
The US Ambassador to Malawi, David Young, has stated that his government completely supports Chakwera’s anti-corruption crusade, stating that the country’s poverty, which he defined as a national crisis, is partially due to the country’s high levels of corruption.
