Mr. Splash: Geoffrey Kapusa’s Legacy Lives On as Tributes Flow

The passing of former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) entertainment journalist Geofrey Kapusa has left a somber atmosphere in the media landscape and the country at large. Succumbing to a prolonged illness, Kapusa breathed his last this morning at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, as confirmed by his sister, Yamikani Kapusa.

As news of his demise spreads, heartfelt tributes are pouring in across social media platforms, reflecting the profound impact Kapusa had on audiences and colleagues alike.

Golden Matonga, Chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter, lamented Kapusa’s loss as a devastating blow to the media industry. Describing him as one of Malawi’s original television celebrities, Matonga recalled the era when Kapusa, affectionately known as Mr. Splash, mesmerized viewers with his charisma on the public broadcaster.

Matonga emphasized that Kapusa’s influence extended beyond entertainment, inspiring numerous individuals to pursue careers in journalism. He remarked that Kapusa’s absence will be keenly felt by a multitude of Malawians who fondly remember gathering in their living rooms to watch his captivating performances.

Amidst the mourning, details of Kapusa’s vigil in Machijiri and burial in Malosa, Zomba, are awaited, offering an opportunity for loved ones and admirers to bid farewell to a beloved figure whose legacy will endure in the annals of Malawian media history.
