The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) elective convention has delivered a seismic shift in the party’s power structure, with Richard Chimwendo Banda emerging victorious as Secretary General. In a stunning twist, Catherine Gotani Hara has shattered expectations by clinching the 1st Deputy President position, defeating party heavyweights Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, Moses Kunkuyu, and the flashy newcomer, Vitumbiko Mumba.
Gotani Hara’s triumph, backed by 438 votes, left Mumba trailing with 313 votes, while Zikhale Ng’oma could muster only a meager 93. The political landscape has been dramatically altered, leaving Moses Kunkuyu, Kenzie Msukwa, and Brown Mpinganjira among the notable casualties in this fiercely contested race.
Zikhale Ng’oma conceded defeat in a post on his Facebook page:
“I have to thank all the MCP delegates who voted and supported me on the bold decision I took to contest on the position of the 1st Deputy President of the party on the ongoing national elective convention. As MCP family, let’s join hands to make our party stronger and help president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera in moving the party forward. Congratulation to the winners,” he wrote.
