Unima student of Chitipa origin Martin Kachigayo sentenced to 22 months in Prison

Real quick trial. Zomba senior Magistrate Austin Banda has sentenced  University of Malawi third year Student Martin Kachigayo to 22 months in Prison for stealing laptops from University Students resident in Chikanda Ghetto, home to many a student.

Passing the sentence, Magistrate Banda said has done so to deter would-be offenders.

“There are many need students at the institution who struggle to survive but they do not steal and this sentence is to deter would be offenders” said Banda.

According to Zomba Police Station Spokesperson, Patricia Sipiliano Martin Kachigayi, 26, hails  from Budonda village in the area of Traditional Authority Kameme in Chitipa district.

At the time of his arrest, fellow students had no kind words for him.

“This guy is a snake in the grass. He has been stealing Phones, PCs, and other things belonging to fellow students in Chikanda, especially in girls’ hostels. He has ever received a warning. But now hear brothers & sisters; Martin has been caught and he is now in police custody here in Zomba. He was caught stealing PCs in a girls’ hostel close to Good Morning restaurant (waba ma PC ambiri ama girls ). Glory be to God wagwidwa.

It is not clear whether he has been expelled following his being convicted.
