UNICEF Malawi Representative Omol Commends Strong Partnership with Ministry of Water

Minister Abida Mia with Omol and other staff members

UNICEF Malawi Representative, Shadrack Omol, paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Honourable Abida Sidik Mia, in Lilongwe. Speaking at the meeting, Omol said, he decided to meet the Minister to get an overview of the Ministry’s operation, as it is necessary for UNICEF to align their programmes with the Ministry’s as far as provision of WASH services is concerned.

“I’ve been told by my staff at the office that there is a health relationship between us and your Ministry, and that your door is ways open when we need you. I would like for this collaboration to continue as we serve the people of Malawi” said Omol.

In her reaction, the Minister welcomed Omol to Malawi, and gave a brief overview of the Ministry’s operations. The Minister made emphasis on issues of policy shift in regards to rural water supply, where she says the Ministry needs financial support to meet the need.

“Due to climate change factors, we are shifting our policy towards rural water supply, from handheld boreholes to more efficient Solar powered high-yielding boreholes with piped water” said the Mia

UNICEF plays a key role in supporting Government’s efforts in ensuring that people in the country gain and maintain access to clean and portable WASH services, and other operational issues in emergencies and disasters like the recent Cyclones and Cholera outbreak.
