The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) elections which were taking place in Malawi’s lakeshore resort district of Mangochi has been concluded with a major upset as the incumbent President Tiya Somba Banda has been resoundingly defeated by Fleetwood Haiya of Nyasa Bullets FC.
Football elections are known for old timers retaining their positions for as long as they want as they exploit and grease the system to ensure re-election but not this time. Hauya got 30 votes against Banda’s 18 votes in a clear show of lack of no confidence on the part of Banda after a 12 year reign.
The Vice Presidency has been retained by Gilbert Mitawa who went unopposed with Williams Banda retaining the General Secretary Position with Donnex Chilonga as Vice President. Allie Mwachande has been elected Treasure and Solomon Gomezgan Mchawi going unopposed as Legal Advisor. The executive members are Chimwemwe Nyirenda, Henry Banda, Akudzike Kafwamba, Daud Mthanthiko and Tonald Chiwaula.
