Khato Civils, joining hands with its sister company, South Zambezi Engineering Services has donated one hundred million Kwacha towards Cyclone Freddy victims’ relief.

Khato Civils which is founded and chaired by Simbi Phiri has joined hands with South Zambezi, of which Executive Director is Simbi Phiri’s wife, in reaching out to the affected 10,000 plus population with solidarity message and condolences to those who have lost beloved ones to the disaster.

The donation which has been channeled through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) is, so far, the largest chunk given by a single local entity.

Handing over a symbolic cheque of the donation on behalf of the two companies was Simbi Phiri’s son, Ashan who is Khato Civils’ Country Director – Malawi.

In a statement issued by Khato’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mongezi Mnyani, the donors have urged that their support should go directly to the persons displaced by the disaster and currently living in over 50 emergency camps set up by DoDMA in the affected districts in southern region.

“Having seen the scale of devastation from tropical cyclone Freddy in southern Malawi and having heed His Excellency President Lazarus Chakwera’s call for support, [we] immediately make a transfer of One Hundred Million Kwacha to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs which is coordinating response efforts on behalf of the State”, reads the statement in part.

President Lazarus Chakwera, who declared State of Disaster in the affected districts, called upon local and global partners to render assistance towards the disaster victims who need urgent relief and recovery plan.
