President Chakwera’s Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining strategy gains momentum in Zomba

President Lazarus Chakwera’s Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) initiative has garnered attention and support at the local level, with the Vice President, Dr. Michael Usi, recently commending the Zomba District Council for its proactive approach in aligning with the government’s vision for economic development.

Trailing the unveiling of the ATM strategy during his first two years in office, President Chakwera subsequently launched the ATM promotion week in April last year, a move which was characterized by an impassioned appeal to Malawians to embrace patriotism as a cornerstone for realizing the initiative’s goals. The ATM strategy focuses on three key sectors: Agriculture for food security and commerce, Tourism for job creation, and Mining for wealth generation, specifically aimed at enhancing productivity.

During his visit to Zomba on Wednesday, Vice President Usi recognized the council’s efforts in spearheading public reforms, particularly in the hospitality and renewable energy sectors. He expressed enthusiasm for the significant investments made, including the construction of a new lodge and the establishment of a biogas facility at Thondwe Market, aimed at harnessing renewable energy.

“Your achievements in hospitality and tourism are commendable,” Usi stated. “On top of what you have said and done, I feel like you could as well utilize the military museum, which has huge tourism potential.”

Dr. Usi emphasized the importance of creative thinking and encouraged the council to continue dreaming big for the district. He also pointed out that community engagement is crucial for development and stressed the need for ongoing investment in human capacity to ensure the success of local initiatives.

In response to the Vice President’s visit, Zomba District Commissioner Reinghard Chavula expressed appreciation, describing the encounter as a motivating factor for the council’s ongoing initiatives: “We have a number of initiatives aimed at improving the status of the district, including the expansion of markets and the development of residential plots,” he shared.
