Speaking during Kamuzu Day Celebrations at Civil Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera aimed at a Ministry of Justice dishonest and underperforming officer who worked on a single file for four months. Chakwera made the remark to underscore the point of hard work and the vision of Kamuzu to have a viable civil service.
“This week, I heard of a public servant in the Ministry of Justice who has worked on a single case file in a space of four months without any action from the Department of Human Resource Management and Development (DHRMD). Instead, the DHRMD transferred him to another ministry to continue being paid for being unproductive. That is unacceptable,” he said.
Chakwera has since urged the controlling officers to be responsible by making sure that everyone works hard.
“If you are a controlling officer, it is your responsibility to ensure the public servants who report to you show up at work on time every day, do the work they are assigned, do it to the highest standards of excellence and speed and are held accountable when they fail to do so.
Additionally, if you are a controlling officer, it is your responsibility to ensure that the public servants who report to you are executing their duties without partiality without being corrupted without being influenced by outside forces without violating the law and it is your responsibility to hold everyone who does not meet these standards accountable,” he said.
The Malawi leader said he has information that thousands of public servants from various public institutions who have broken the law by not declaring their assets.
