Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested former Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Commissioner for Customs and Excise, Shadric Namalomba, along with businessman Noel Masangwi, over their alleged involvement in the illegal exportation of banned Mukula logs.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the ACB said Namalomba used his official position in 2015 to facilitate the release and export of Mukula hardwood logs in contravention of the Ministry of Trade’s 2008 ban. The logs were unlawfully transferred to a facility linked to Masangwi, bypassing established customs protocols and export regulations.
The Bureau’s investigation established that Namalomba abused his office for the benefit of Masangwi and conspired with him to carry out the illegal transactions. The actions are said to have taken place between January and March 2015 in both Blantyre and Lilongwe.
Namalomba is expected to be formally charged in court with misuse of public office under Section 25B(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act, and conspiracy to commit a felony under Section 404 of the Penal Code. The ACB has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law and tackling corruption, especially where public office is used for personal or private gai
