Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, the former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Regional Governor for the North, has been released from Mzimba Prison where he was serving a four-year sentence.

His release comes after he challenged his conviction and sentencing at the Mzuzu High Court.

Giving the judgment today morning, Justice Chimwemwe Kamowa upheld the conviction but not the punishment, and Ngwira was immediately released.

During his time as a member of Parliament for the Mzimba Hora Constituency, Ngwira was convicted of misusing the Local Development Fund (LDF).

The Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Ngwira in 2018 after evidence proved that he faked bank documents to obtain K650,000.

Ngwira later returned K400, 000, according to court records.

Ngwira was one of the powerful individuals in the northern region during the reign of late Bingu wa Mutharika.

He accumulated wealth and built mansions in Mzuzu City, but later the court declared him bankrupt.
