Msukwa Applies New Vetting Rules: MCP Convention Candidates List Out Today

Kezzie Msukwa: We have nothing to hide.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) elective convention Chairperson, Kezzie Msukwa, has announced that new stringent regulations have been implemented for candidate vetting in the upcoming elective convention slated for 8th August, 2024 at BICC in the capital Lilongwe.

According to these rules, individuals who have joined the party within the last two years are barred from contesting. This policy aims to preserve the integrity and ideological purity of the MCP by preventing recent newcomers, who may bring undesirable influences, from infiltrating the party’s national politburo.

This decision has faced legal challenges, notably from Eddie Banda, who argues that the policy is unjust. The court is set to rule on the matter tomorrow, with MCP lawyer Abison Chitukula contending that the issue is political rather than judicial.

Msukwa assured the public that the vetting process has been thorough and transparent, with the approved candidate list for the elective Indaba to be revealed today.

He said:

“We have nothing to hide. The names of candidates will be made public on Monday. Over one hundred people submitted nominations and we needed thorough checking, especially in the face of the regulations made by the NEC, which have been used in the vetting process.”
