With the 2025 elections looming on the horizon, where Malawians will have the opportunity to shape the future of their leadership, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that a national identity card will serve as the sole proof of eligibility for citizens to vote in any voter election. What it means is that the registration of voters will be subject to production of national Identity card.
Andrew Mpesi, the chief elections officer of MEC, has assured that they are working closely with the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to address any potential challenges associated with using the National ID for voter registration.
Mpesi’s statement came in response to concerns raised by the Parliamentary Committee on Governance Assurances and Public Sector Reforms regarding the registration process and the need to reach out to those who have not yet registered or renewed their expired cards.
