Martha Chizuma’s ACB Exit: Eggs on Face as Chilima Case Dropped

As has been widely reported, the Chakwera administration, through the Director of Public Prosecution, has made a startling move, opting to terminate the case against State Vice President Saulos Chilima, citing reasons of national security. This seismic decision shows great weakness on the part the ACB Director Martha Chizuma.

Political commentators are drawing parallels between Martha Chizuma and former President Joyce Banda. The parallel suggests a troubling pattern of manipulation by Western interests, orchestrating events to serve their clandestine agendas.

Local media reports indicate that Chizuma, in her role as ACB Director, received evidence implicating Chilima, from the British Crime Investigation unit, but this evidence was allegedly obtained through dubious means, rendering it inadmissible in Malawian courts. This development, reminiscent of the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Misozi Chanthunya vs Republic case, underscores the delicate balance between justice and legality.

Again, when you consider the saga surrounding former DPP Dr. Steven Kayuni, it adds a layer of intrigue. Kayuni’s cautious approach when he was DPP, refusing consent for the ACB to prosecute Chilima due to insufficient evidence, is now vindicated. In contrast, Chizuma’s theatrical tactics, appealing to public sentiment and donor pressure, have backfired spectacularly.

The emergence of Masauko Chamkakala as the new DPP brought a sense of calm and rationality to the proceedings. Now, his decision to halt the case against Chilima highlights a return to legal integrity and impartiality.

Chizuma, meanwhile, finds herself in a precarious position. With her tenure at the ACB drawing to a close, she faces intense scrutiny and criticism. Malawians lament her perceived lack of accomplishments, contrasting her tenure at the Ombudsman with her tumultuous tenure at the ACB.

Her impending departure marks the end of a promising chapter tainted by disappointment and disillusionment. Once hailed as a beacon of hope in the fight against corruption, Chizuma’s legacy now appears tarnished, a cautionary tale of unfulfilled potential and misplaced trust.
