Malawi to have 228 parliamentarians in 2025

Dr. Chifundo Kachale: MEC Chairperson

LILONGWE-The Malawi Electoral Commission MEC says there will be an upward adjustment of Constituencies from the current 193 to 228.

This comes as commission is set to make new boundaries following the recent consultations on demarcation exercise.

Addressing the press in Lilongwe Dr. Chifundo Kachale said with the new recommendations it means that the Northern Region will have 37 constituencies, Central Region will have 93 constituencies and 98 constituencies for southern Region.

According to Kachale, stakeholders in all constituencies have to agree if there is need to change name for the area.

Kachale added that the new demarcation of constituencies and wards will be effective in 2025 tripartite elections.

Kachale says the whole process will cost the commission 2.1 billion. Recently, a cross section of traditional leaders in the country worried that the constituency demarcation exercise will limit their influence.

In response to this, MEC engaged in rigorous community sensitization meetings with the local leaders so as to dispel those fears.
