Malawi Prison Service Celebrates Outstanding MSCE Performance by Inmates

Out of the 97 individuals who took the 2023 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) exam, 51 inmates have successfully passed. Among them, 17 individuals achieved the highest score of 17 points.

The top-performing student is Paul Isaab Tembo, who is incarcerated at Maula prison in Lilongwe.

A significant milestone was achieved by Yvonne Kalimona, a female inmate from Mzuzu prison, who made history by scoring 21 points, becoming the first female to achieve this.

Another remarkable achievement comes from Kawedi Shaban, a prisoner at Zomba Central Prison, who attained the highest score of 22 points.

Chimwemwe Shawa, the spokesperson for the Malawi Prison Service (MPS), told the local media that what is particularly encouraging is that a majority of the successful inmates have relatively few years left in their sentences. Shawa expressed, “We are actively encouraging them to apply for university enrolment because most of them will complete their sentences in the near future.”
