Malawi’s President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, accompanied by First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera, arrived in Karonga via Karonga Airport on Monday morning, embarking on a series of official engagements within the district.
Upon their arrival, the President received a warm welcome from various dignitaries, including Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale, Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia, Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire, as well as prominent figures from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) such as Regional Chairperson for the North Kezzie Msukwa, Vice President for the North Harry Mkandawire, and Senior Chief Kalonga, among others.
President Chakwera’s first order of business will be a courteous visit to Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa Districts, followed by a trip to Kambwe Noil to provide assistance to flood survivors from the district’s five camps, who suffered extensive property damage due to the recent overflow of the North Rikuru River.
Subsequently, the President will tour various development projects in the region, including the Karonga Town Water Supply Project, the Nthola-Ilola Rice Milling and Processing Plant, and the Wovwe Rice Irrigation Scheme in Karonga South, underscoring his commitment to fostering progress and prosperity in Karonga and beyond.
