Malawi AG Thabo Nyirenda recovers UK Butchery-Fertilizer money: He who laughs last…

Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda.

It is music to our ears to hear that the Malawi Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, has made progress in recovering the funds lost in the fertilizer transaction involving the Affordable Input Programme (AIP). The transaction involved some sloppy Malawian government officials’ foolishly purchasing fertilizer from a butcher shop in the United Kingdom.

The Attorney General promised to recoup the money and gave a deadline and worked diligently to achieve the end goal reflected in his promise.

Yesterday, Nyirenda has been vindicated as he confirmed that a court in Bavaria in Germany had ordered the confiscation of 516,000 Euros belonging to the Smallholder Farmers Fertilizer Revolving Fund of Malawi.

According to the Attorney General, the funds will be transferred from Fidor Bank AG to the Munich prosecutor’s account and then transferred to the Smallholder Farmers Fertilizer Revolving Fund account here in Malawi.

Nyirenda mentioned that communication regarding the court’s order was made through a zoom meeting with the German prosecutors. By the end of the meeting, the Attorney General formally requested a copy of the order. While the original order was in German, it is expected to be translated into English by Monday for better understanding.

This development is a positive step towards recovering the funds lost in the fertilizer transaction. It demonstrates the Attorney General’s commitment to fulfilling his promise to the Malawian people.
