Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has revoked licence for Rainbow Television—a local television station in the country.
In a statement, MACRA Director General Daudi Suleiman said the regulatory body has revoked the Television Content licence for the station citing ‘a substantial breach of the condition of the licence namely failure to pay annual licence fees set under the licence.”
“The revocation of the Rainbow Television’s licence will be effective 30 days from 9th June 2022, the date Rainbow Television received notification from MACRA revoking the licence,” reads the statement in part.
Following this development, MACRA is advising all licensees in the Telecommunications, Broadcasting and Postal sectors, that failure to pay annual licence fees is a serious breach of their licences and they risk having their licenses revoked if they don’t comply.
