Livingstonia Synod Locks Coffin, Denying Mutharika Last Respects: Goodal Gondwe sleeps

Mutharika denied paying last respects

Former Malawian President Peter Mutharika, who did not attend the funeral house in Lilongwe, arrived late to the burial ceremony of his former associate, Finance Minister Goodal Gondwe, held at Enukweni in Mzimba. Notably, individuals like Saulos Chilima and others who arrived on time had already paid their final respects. Subsequently, the clergy from the Livingstonia Synod took the decision to close the casket. Unfortunately for Mutharika, upon his delayed arrival, the casket could not be reopened, effectively depriving him of the opportunity to bid farewell to his friend and the Vice President of his Democratic Progressive Party, who was responsible for the Northern Region.

Reverend William Tembo, the Synod General Secretary, communicated that ample waiting had taken place. This turn of events is emblematic of Mutharika’s diminishing popularity among Malawians. Many Malawians have long  suggested that the best course of action for Mutharika would be to retire from politics and enjoy his retirement.
