The newly elected President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Fleetwood Haiya, accompanied by the Secretary General of the FA yesterday met FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Saudi Arabia as a courtesy call. It is customary for Presidents to pay a courtesy call those superior to them when they have just been elected.
During the meeting, Infantino said that ” It was a great pleasure to meet the new Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya and listen to his very detailed and far-reaching plans for developing football in his country.
He added:
“We talked about the importance of good infrastructure for football development and the role that football can play in education. Malawi is a country with a huge football potential and, with the support of the FIFA Forward development programme and the increased opportunities for member associations to participate in global competitions, I believe that together we can put Malawian football in the spotlight.”
Haiya trounced long time football administrator Walter Nyamilandu Manda in an elected which took place in Mzuzu on 16th December, 2023.
