The Malawi Minister of Finance Sosten Gwengwe has named the worst and best-performing State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) of the year 2022.
Gwengwe disclosed that on the best-performing SOEs in the trading sector, Egenco tops the list, followed by Lilongwe Water Board and Airport Development Limited. The best-performing regulator is Macra followed by Teveta and the National Construction Industry Council.
The worst have also been named. Gwengwe said Admarc tops the list of worst performers in the trading sector, followed by Blantyre Water Board and the National Economic Empowerment Fund.
In the regulatory sector, the Tobacco Commission has been singled out as the worst-performing regulator.
The Finance Minister disclosed that the government is currently looking at the relevance of some SOEs, which are 72 in total stating that government has plans to either close these useless state-owned enterprises or merge them with others.
As for Egenco, the stability of electricity in the country would indeed reasonably see them as the best as recently, Malawians were used to incessant load shedding.
