DPP’s popularity in the north continues to shrink as lawmaker and all area committees defect to the ruling party

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) continues to suffer defections, with the latest blow coming from Karonga North MP, Mungaswalu Mwambande, who has joined the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Mwambande, who once served as Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Energy, and Mining under Peter Mutharika’s administration in 2019, officially ditched the DPP to join the ruling MCP on Tuesday this week.

He has since confirmed his defection in an exclusive interview, citing overwhelming pressure from his constituents and visible development projects under President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership in his area.

Sniffing that his constituents are not prepared to give the opposition DPP a vote, the former DPP guru counted his options and realized than he was left with none apart from drifting with the tide of his constituents.

“I am no longer with DPP. I have officially joined MCP. The people in my constituency have been urging me to make this move and I cannot ignore their voice”, said Mwambande adding that “the development initiatives by this governmentin Laronga have convinced me that MCP is the future”.

According to Mwambande, all DPP committee members in Karonga North had already crossed over to MCP last year, leaving him as one of the last remaining DPP figures in the area.

Meanwhile, DPP Spokesperson, Shadrick Namalomba refused to comment on the manner when contacted.
