In what seems to be the continuation of chaos in the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), about 44 Members of Parliament formerly affiliated with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have stated that they will not back any contender who opposes Peter Mutharika in the party’s upcoming elective conference scheduled for July next year.
Victor Musowa, a representative of the MPs, expressed this stance after endorsing Mutharika for the 2025 elections during a meeting at Page House in Mangochi. Musowa explained that the MPs have decided to support Mutharika because he is highly regarded by the people at the grassroots level.
Musowa stated that the MPs will actively campaign for Mutharika and refuse to support any other candidate, as they believe that he is the only one currently trusted by Malawians. The legislators are optimistic that Mutharika will soon make an announcement about his candidacy.
Chipiliro Mpinganjira, the Blantyre City Central legislator, also echoed Musowa’s sentiments, emphasizing Mutharika’s leadership qualities and his ability to stabilize the economy during his previous tenure as President.
Mpinganjira expressed the desire to encourage Mutharika to accept endorsements from numerous party members who wish for him to lead the party in the 2025 Tripartite Elections. Mpinganjira added that Mutharika’s candidacy would bring unity to the divided DPP, which currently has several aspiring candidates.
The endorsement of President Peter Mutharika has been described by some political commentators as heralding the death and burial of the DPP whose tombstone unveiling is scheduled for 2025.
