Chakwera criss-crosses Dedza, mobilizing communities for voter registration

In a spirited campaign to enhance voter registration and promote community development, President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera embarked on an extensive tour of various localities in Dedza, engaging with local chiefs and community members. The president’s initiative aimed to encourage citizens to register for the upcoming next year elections, underscoring the importance of participation in the democratic process.

Beginning his tour on Monday at Magomero Trading Centre, President Chakwera met with community members and traditional leaders, fostering a sense of urgency around the voter registration drive. His journey continued to three additional sites, culminating in a significant visit to Linthipe Secondary School on Tuesday, where he interacted with over 700 chiefs.

During these encounters, President Chakwera emphasized the critical need for voter registration, stating, “Without registration, it will be impossible for our citizens to exercise their right to vote in next year’s elections.” He reiterated his government’s commitment to uphold democratic principles for the benefit of all Malawians, stressing the vital role of grassroots participation in shaping the nation’s future.

To support these democratic processes, President Chakwera announced a substantial increase in the Constituency Development Fund, raising it from K100 million to K200 million. “This enhancement is a direct effort to empower local communities and ensure that development initiatives reach those who need them most,” he explained.

In his address, President Chakwera also acknowledged the challenges faced by the nation, attributing some to natural disasters while reminding the audience that the immediate past administration ransacked the country’s economy through financial mismanagement and looting that hindered development progress. He assured the chiefs of his government’s dedication to infrastructure development, highlighting ongoing discussions with development partners to create effective debt repayment strategies that will bolster economic growth.

“Together, we are working on constructing vital tarmac roads in your district and promoting agricultural resilience through our Agriculture Commercialization and National Economic Empowerment Fund,” Chakwera said, urging farmers to remain diligent and resilient in their efforts. He also said government is discussing with other development partners on debt repayment mechanisms to ensure progress on development.

In closing, President Chakwera called on the district’s chiefs to champion peace and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that coexist within their communities. Senior Chief Chauma praised the president for his commitment to engaging with local leaders, recognizing the importance of collaboration in driving development forward.
