Lilongwe, July 5 — In a warm and symbolic welcome fit for a visiting statesman, the President of Botswana, Duma Boko, was on Friday awarded the “Freedom of the City” of Lilongwe by Mayor Esther Sagawa as he began his three-day state visit to Malawi.
Like a guest of honour handed the keys to a grand home, President Boko received the ceremonial key to Lilongwe at the Civic Offices — a gesture steeped in tradition, signifying trust and friendship between the host city and its visitor. Before receiving the key, he signed the Visitors’ Book, marking his official welcome.
Visibly touched, President Boko thanked the people of Malawi for their hospitality and the invitation to attend the country’s 61st Independence Day celebrations. He praised the kindness and discipline of Malawians, describing the moment as humbling.
“I am truly honoured to receive this key to the city. I accept it with all the goodwill and benefits that come with it — to enjoy Lilongwe and to interact with its warm-hearted people,” he said.
Mayor Sagawa, in her remarks, said the honour reflected the strong bond between Lilongwe and the people of Botswana. “It is a great honour to bestow this freedom of the city status upon you, Mr. President. I hope you will take time to enjoy the calm beauty of Lilongwe and maybe return to explore more of what nature has gifted our city,” she said.
President Boko was accompanied by senior Malawian officials, including the Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, and the Minister of Trade, Vitumbiko Mumba.
As the saying goes, “when the guest is smiling, the host has done well.” And judging by the reception and ceremonial honours, Malawi certainly rolled out the red carpet.
